Sermons of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)
Part 2 of 3

by Rami Mahmoud Elsawah

[This sermon was delivered on the Ninth Day of Dhul-Hijjah 10 A.H. in the 'Uranah valley of Mount Arafat' in Mecca.]

After praising and thanking Allah the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

"O People, lend me an attentive ear, for I know not whether after this year I shall ever be amongst you again. Therefore listen to what I am saying very carefully and take these words to those who could not be present here today.

O People, just as you regard this month, this day, this city as Sacred, so regard the life and property of every Muslim as a sacred trust. Return the goods entrusted to you to their rightful owners. Hurt no one so that no one may hurt you. Remember that you will indeed meet your Lord, and that he will indeed reckon your deeds. Allah has forbidden you to take usury (interest), therefore all interest obligations shall henceforth be waived. Your capital is yours to keep. You will neither inflict nor suffer any inequity. Allah has judged that there shall be no interest and that all the interest due to Abbas ibn 'Abd'al Muttalib [the Prophet's uncle] be waived.

Every right arising out of homicide in pre-islamic days is henceforth waived and the first such right that i waive is that arising from the murder of Rabiah ibn al Harithibn.

O People, the unbelievers indulge in tampering with the calender in order to make permissible that which Allah forbade, and to forbid that which Allah has made permissible. With Allah the months are twelve in number. Four of them are holy, three of these are successive and one occurs singly between the months of Jumada and Shaban.

Beware of Satan, for the safety of your religion. He has lost all hope of that he will be able to lead you astray in big things, so beware of following him in small things.

O People, it is true that you have certain rights with regard to your women but they also have rights over you. Remember that you have taken them as your wives only under Allah's trust and with His permission. If they abide by your right, then to them belongs the right to be fed and clothed in kindness. Do treat your women well and be kind to them for they are your partners and committed helpers. And it is your right that they do not make friends with anyone of whom you do not approve, as well as never to be unchaste. O People, listen to me in earnest, worship Allah, say your five daily prayers, fast during the month of Ramadhan, and give your wealth in Zakat. Perform Hajj if you can afford to.

All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over a black nor a black has any superiority over a white - except by piety and good action. Learn that every Muslim is a brother to every Muslim and that the Muslims constitute one brotherhood. Nothing shall be legitimate to a Muslim which belogs to a fellow Muslim unless it was given freely and willingly. Do not therefore do injustice to yourselves. Remember one day you will meet Allah and answer your deeds. So beware: do not stray from the path of righteousness after I am gone.

O People, no prophet or apostle will come after me, and no new faith will be born. Reason well, therefore, O People, and understand my words which I convey to you. I leave behind me two things, the Qur'an and my Sunnah and if you follow these you will never go astray.

All those who listen to me shall pass on my words to others and those to others again; and may the last ones understand my words better than those who listen to me directly. Be my witness, O Allah, that I have conveyed Your message to Your people."

mashaAllah. very inspiring. you know, if one to really disect all the lessons we can take from this, that would be a book in and of itself. this was his final sermon. and you see that he was giving hints to the sahabah that indeed his death was near as he says "for I know not whether after this year i shall ever be amongst you again"

and he did this on many instances, before his death.

May Allah subhana wa ta'ala allow us to be with him on the day of judgment. ameen.

without fail, every time I have read this sermon I have gotten teary eyed ... specially the last line. It's a very odd thing to say, but the last line is so final, it makes me miss him (pbuh) (I know, odd, me never having been alive in his time and all). Imagine the state of those who had lived with him (pbuh) and witnessed his (pbuh) passing away?

May Allah give us wisdom and insight to understand his (pbuh) words fully and live our lives accordingly. Ameen.

Book 031, Number 6009:
Anas reported that after the death of Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) Abu Bakr said to 'Umar: Let us visit Umm Aiman as Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) used to visit her. As we came to her, she wept. They (Abu Bakr and Umar) said to her: What makes you weep? What is in store (in the next world) for Allah's-Messenger (may peace be upon him) is better than (this worldly life). She said: I weep not because I am ignorant of the fact that what is in store for Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) (in the next world) is better than (this world), but I weep because the revelation which came from the Heaven has ceased to come. This moved both of them to tears and they began to weep along with her.

Assalamu Alaikum,

Jazakallah Khair for posting this. Sr. Saima, you've described so well what I also feel reading the last line of the sermon. There's something very powerful about the closing ...

on the one hand, it evokes the tremendous task that was given to the Prophet (may peace be upon him), all the struggle, and the beautiful outcome ("...and when you see the people entering the deen of Allah in crowds" - Surah Nasr ... also makes me cry).

on the other hand, with the Prophet's (may peace be upon him) mission completed and no more revelation to come, I feel this implication that our real task begins at this point. For the companions of the prophet (may peace be upon him), it must have been such an immense sense of grief coupled with responsibility ...to "pass on my words to others and those to others again." It's like this growing up/coming of age/graduating college kind of feeling ... you have been given the Qur'an and 23 years of Sunnah showing how to put it in practice ... now you're in the real world ... you'll have to choose you're path and bear the consequences.

... of course this doesn't compare to any worldly passage because, even with the revelation over, we've been given the privilege to approach Allah (subhanu wa ta'ala) for help everyday. As the rest of Surah Nasr goes, "...then celebrate the praises of your Lord and seek His forgiveness, for indeed He is Most Forgiving."

btw, jazak allah khair everyone for all your inspirational pieces. Though I post much on this site, I benefit a lot from reading your work and comments.

I think of all the European country, France is the most racist and ignorant country out there...bunch of useless people...if you ask me!

Sorry, my reaction is because of the comments made by the French Newspaper representative, and the subsequent govt. stand on the incident of pictures/caricatures depicting Muhammad (sal-lal-la-hu-wa-sal-lam) in the newspaper.

I hope the newspapers (both french & german)who were responsible, should crash & burn...Ameen

Assalaamu Alaikum All:

All praise is to Allah, and Blessings and salawaat on Prophet Muhammad (sal-lal-la-hu-wa-sal-lam)...Ameen

When Sept 11th happened, a lot of Americans started reading about Islaam because of the curiosity...They must have also read about Muslim beliefs in all prophets of Allah, including Adam, Noah, Ibrahim, Moses, David, Isa (aliyhessallam ajmaeen), and finally Muhammad (sal-lal-la-hu-wa-sal-lam).

But there wasn't much relevance that could be made between these prophets to an average american who was just reading to know about Islaam...

But, with these recent events in Europe, I am pretty sure, this will prompt many Americans to investigate and read more about prophet Muhammad (sal-lal-la-hu-wa-sal-lam) exclusively and his seerah...insha'Allah.

See, Subhan'Allah...there is Khair in everything...and ONLY ALLAH knows what is Best.

“Therefore, listen to what I am saying to you very carefully and take these words to those who could not be present today.”

Subhanallah, Allah tells us in the Quran that Muhammad was sent as Rahmitin lil 3alameen. As a Mercy to all of mankind. And this is just one of the many examples of this. That even 1400 years after his death the words that he spoke are easily accessable to us today. “take this words to those who could not be present today” are we not of those who were not present? La illaha illal Allah, the greatness of Allah subhana wa ta’ala to allow his Ummah, not just the ones who were present at his time, but his entire ummah to hear his message. Subhanallah. there is a hadith where the Prophet Salallahu alayhi wa sallam says to his companions ‘i miss my beloved ones’. the companions were surprised and said ‘oh messenger, are we not your beloved ones?’. The prophet Salallahu alayhi wa sallam replied ‘you are my companions’. then they said ‘who are your beloved ones?’ The prophet Salallahu alayhi wa sallam replied ‘the people who will come after you and they believe in me without seeing me….’

“O people, just as you regard this month, this day, this city as sacred, so regard the life and property of every Muslim as a sacred trust.”
The sermon was indeed done on the most blessed day of the year the 9th day of dhulhijjah , in the most blessed city Meccal mukarimah, on mount Arafat. “so regard the life and property of every Muslim as a sacred trust” … what does that mean?

It’s intresting, because I don’t normally talk about these issues… I was watching a frontline documentary and they mentioned that in some of these “terrorists” ideologies, that for them it’s ok to drink, and go out and party , not grow their beard, and that it's ok to kill other Muslims in the process, so long as for them it’s ok because they are going to die for the sake of Allah and so the end always justifies the means. Subhanallah. How backwards this is from what the Prophet Salallahu alayhi wa salam has taught us. These people who commit suicide bombings which also kill muslims in the process, they think its ok to sacrifice the life of a Muslim for what they for a “noble cause”, but no. this is not what our beloved prophet Salallahu alayhi wa salam taught, he taught us that the “life and property of EVERY Muslim is sacred” and should be regarded that way.

Sister Gumbo: Sorry your nick reminds me of chewing gum, somehow :)

Masha'Allah...well said...I think these folks are so deluded that that cant see anything beyond their skewed aims & objectives...for them, all means (halal or haraam) are justified to bring about the change that they are seeking.

1400 years or so ago we had a similar group who were very "religious" yet they would kill muslims, they were the kharijites...we now have a similar group of folks in the 20-21 century who are not as "religious" but same mentality same attitude, aiming at similar goals.

Subhan'Allah...history keeps repeating itself again & again, and this is one of the fitnah that we are witnessing in our time...

May Allah guide all Muslims, and may Allah bring about changes so that all the world can see the true beauty of Islaam and the Sunnah of Rasul Allah (sal-lal-la-hu-wa-sal-lam).
