This is What Makes Him Cry, Part 1 of 5

by Rami Mahmoud Elsawah

Whenever the Signs of (Allah) Most Gracious were rehearsed to them, they would fall down in prostrate adoration and in tears. (Surat Marium, 58)
---------------------

Five years ago I would have looked in the mirror
And seen before me such a very different man.
He would have looked at me and said salaam
But he would not understand who I am.

Rewind back then, ten years some more
And you would have seen before you a most beautiful little boy.
Whose mother had loved him and filled him with kindness
More than anyone else he ever would know.

She raised him with Taqwa
That stood by him since he was small
It gave him a strength and a dignity
That made him untouchable by all.

He was seven years old,
Taunted and mocked at in school
At the playground, at the bus stop
Even going home too.

His heritage, his color, his body, his deen...
From their audible harm he would never be free.

Yet he went by those years without a drop of self-esteem taken away
It was enough for him to say:
"They will get theirs on the Judgement Day."

He had a mother who held him
Who filled him with love
Who taught him of Allah and His Messengers
Peace and blessings be upon them all.

She taught him piety and faith
Taught him to be kind to other people
To respect elders and be upright
To stay away from what is evil.

You would have seen before you a small little boy
Whose faith had allowed his innocence to grow.
To roam free in the vast fields of beautiful Eman
To let his heart become gentle and his eyes soft like white sand.

Salaam Rami San:

Seems to me you are one dynamic poet (in the making) at a tender age of 22...Masha'Allah.
Your words and stanzas are delightful. you probably have taken the lion's share of poetic potential among your siblings....Unless Amani san proves otherwise.

But overall, (I cant say this enough) You bunch of young muslims are amazing...Masha'Allah...I see great hope in all the sisters and brothers who contribute on this site...May Allah prepare you all for what lies ahead in your life to be successful muslims...Ameen

I'm actually twenty-three. I know...the math doesn't add up. :)

Very nice, Rami, masha'Allah. I like the changes; good revisions.

However, I still see no mention of a beloved, caring older sister. Tsk, tsk. :P

[trying to move the tsunami discussion away from my article]

didn't anyone notice that whole islands were wiped out? there were some where there was NO TRACE OF LIFE OR CIVILIZATION. it reminded me of this:

"And how many have we destroyed before them? Do you find a single one of them or hear a whisper from them?" (19/Maryam:98)

Just to remind everyone:

Select "Asia Tsunami Emergency..." from the drop-down box.

I'll be trying to keep similar comments in the "noisemakers" section.

"If basic needs, particularly access to safe drinking water, are not urgently restored to all populations by the end of this week, WHO [the World Health Organization] fears that outbreaks of infectious disease could result in a similar number of fatalities as occurred due to the
direct impact of the tsunami [around 150,000]."

"We are extremely concerned about the ongoing lack of access to basic needs. Five million people have been severely affected by the tsunamis. We now estimate that as many as 150 000 people are at extreme risk, if a major disease outbreak in the affected areas occurs. The most urgent need now is to make sure everyone has access to safe drinking water."
